Will Middle School Be Different for my Child?

The transition from elementary school to middle school can be a big one for some children. In middle schools, your child is expected to be more independent and will receive much less assistance from teachers. Most children handle this change very well, as they have reached the maturity level required to be ready. Some children will take a little longer to adjust.

If your child attends a Montessori academy offering grade levels from elementary through high school, the transition will be easier, as they will not be changing schools, but just moving into a different phase of school. Their friends will be the same, and their surroundings familiar. This is a huge advantage of sending your child to such a school.

If your child is actually physically changing schools for middle school, the staff will ramp up expectations slowly, in order to give children a chance to learn new surroundings and adjust. If you feel that your child is not adjusting well over the first few weeks, it’s a good idea to go ahead and talk with your child’s teachers about what can be done to make the transition smoother. Most schools will offer a parent night early in the year where you can meet the teachers and ask any questions. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about your child’s day-to-day life at school and how you can help ensure it is the best possible experience.

Middle school is the time of life that brings a lot of changes to the children themselves, as well. This is when puberty starts to happen, and children often become more emotional. It’s important to watch for these changes in your child, and be ready to address any significant issues, should these arise. The staff at your local Plano middle schools are well trained and ready to help your child adjust properly.
