These parts are necessary as our technology gets smaller and smaller.

What’s better: manual, CAM, or conversational?

It depends. Each method is different and used for different purposes. There are three approaches to CNC programming: manual, CAM, and conversational programming.

  • Manual programming takes the form of written code. With this method, you have the most control over what the machine is doing. Manual programming is limited to simple functions, however. It is also time-consuming. Manual programming also requires the programmer to have a detailed knowledge of G-code and is rarely used for making complete part programs.
  • CAM, or computer-aided manufacturing, uses a computer program and a model of the part you want to make. You detail the toolpaths and machining parameters and the program will create the actual G-code. This is the most common CNC programming method. It can handle complex designs and is very fast. CAM programming gives you a high level of control over complex toolpaths. Generally, the more complex the program, the faster the performance in comparison.
  • Conversational programming sends instructions directly to the machine. You select which operation you want from a specific list, plug in the necessary information, and the machine does the rest.
