Since your heart is working against gravity, these valves are needed to keep the blood from flowing back down your legs in between beats. Ironically this is exactly what is happening in varicose veins. Over time the veins harden, and the valves lose their sealing effectiveness. This allows blood to flow back down the vein and collect in the veins, stretching them. This is what causes varicose veins and why they can get so large.
So, How Are They Treated?
The most common treatment is to simply seal off and possibly remove the vein. Most of the blood flow for your legs happens deeper in the large blood vessels, so losing one or two surface veins will not cause any adverse effects. The surgeon will begin by tapping into the vein. They will then inject an adhesive and seal the vein. As they work their way back out of the vein, they will continue to seal it. This process will eventually completely seal off the vein, and the treatment is complete.
