There are many reasons why your doctor might recommend you undergo an MRI. Luckily, no matter the reason for imaging in Maitland, the preparation is the same! The following are a few of the best ways to prepare before visiting your local radiologist.

1. Educate yourself about the procedure. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. Sparing you the complexities of the clever physics behind this astounding medical technology, an MRI allows doctors to utilize radio waves and a magnetic field to create detailed images of your internal organs.

2. Know the risks. Mayo Clinic appropriately notes that any metal within your body could pose a safety risk or could have an effect on the resulting image since MRI machines utilize powerful magnets. There are also a few other situations when your doctor may choose to postpone your MRI. Tell your radiologist or radiology technician if you:

  • have any implants (pacemaker, cochlear implants, artificial heart valves)
  • are aware of shrapnel in your body
  • have tattoos (some darker inks contain metal)
  • are pregnant or could be pregnant
  • have problems with your kidney or liver

3. Luckily, preparing for imaging at your Maitland radiology office is a piece of cake. Before your MRI, you can (and should) eat as you usually would and continue taking your medications unless you have been instructed otherwise. You may want to leave valuable jewelry at home since you will be asked to remove it prior to your scan.

4. Know what to expect during the scan itself! Plan on arriving about half an hour early. Once you have checked in and completed any necessary paperwork, you will change into a hospital gown. The procedure of the MRI itself is usually 45 minutes to one hour for each body part scanned.

Remember, if you have any specific questions, ask your doctor. MRI is a commonly performed, highly informative procedure that requires little preparation on your part. In other words, it’s a win-win!
