A Basic Overview Of Working With Galvanized Pipe Fittings

Galvanized pipe is used in a wide range of different applications and industries. The galvanizing process, which coats zinc onto steel or iron, creates a highly corrosion resistant layer that is bonded to the underlying steel or iron.

The use of galvanized pipe fittings in conjunction with galvanized pipe provides a very durable piping system. It can be used with hot and cold water, different types of chemicals as the galvanization is also completed on the interior of the pipe. Galvanized pipe is not used for gas systems, as the gas creates a chemical reaction that causes the zinc to peel and flake from the interior of the pipe. Depending on the specific characteristics of the soil or the environment, galvanized pipe may not be the best option for underground types of lines.

Working with Pipe and Fittings

In general, galvanized pipe and galvanized pipe fittings are easy to work with. It can be cut on the job using standard pipe cutting tools with rotary wheels, and it is easy to deburr and prepare for joining.

When placing any type of pipe into galvanized pipe fittings, always take the time to deburr the edges of the pipe. This should be completed before threading the pipe, which can be done with a standard die and thread machine or tool.

Depending on the specific application, the threads an also be pre-treated with Teflon tape and the recommended type of pipe joint compound. This should be applied evenly around the pipe and the fitting connection before threading. The connection with the fitting can be tested for leaks and tightened more if required.

Finally, be sure to correctly support the pipe if it is being placed in a horizontal run. Pipe hanging straps should be positioned as close together as necessary to prevent undue weight on the supports or added pressure in the center of the run.
