Poppet valves are also called mushroom valves. They work by removing or inserting a tapered sleeve or plug into a hole. These valves can control gas entering a specified area. Check valves are sometimes called one-way valves because they prevent backflow of fluids or gasses. A good poppet check valve serves both check and poppet purposes and here is more info on the subject.

Benefits of Mushroom Valves

Mushroom valves are simple in design. There is no ball to turn or gate mechanism. You have few moving parts, and a mushroom valve may last a long time. You enjoy low maintenance costs.

Internal combustion engine valves are good examples of mushroom valves. The valve stem has a mushroom type head which fits into a valve seat. When a cam lobe comes into contact with the valve stem it either opens or closes. An intake valve lets gasoline vapor in and then shuts off the opening so combustion can take place.

Check Valves

Check valves prevent gas or fluid from flowing backward. This is an important feature for preventing fluid contamination. For instance, a ball check valve contains a ball inside the valve. When opened, the ball allows fluid or gas flow. However, when the flow stops in one direction, the ball falls backward to close off the backflow.

Poppet Check Valve

If you need a mushroom valve to prevent backflow, a poppet check valve is a good choice. A typical valve has four parts, spring, 0-ring, poppet (mushroom) and valve body. The moving mechanism (spring, poppet, and o-ring) gets pushed open by fluid flow. Once the flow stops, the spring forces the mushroom assembly back into the valve seat, preventing backflow.

Customizing

Sizing these valves is sometimes difficult, and you may need to contact a valve source offering custom parts. They provide professional advice and can help you with most of your valve needs.
