An endodontist in Chicago is a dentist who specializes in working on the pulp and other tissues inside the tooth. The best-known and most common endodontic procedure is the root canal.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a procedure done to save a badly decayed or damaged tooth that will often have a bacterial infection that reached the pulp.
The endodontist will administer a local anesthetic to keep the patient comfortable. They will then place a plastic shield around the affected tooth to isolate it from the patient’s mouth. The dentist will use a drill to access the infected pulp, and then spray a liquid into the pulp chamber to wash out the infected tissues in the tooth and kill the bacteria. The endodontist will remove the pulp and use small instruments to clean the pulp chamber. They will fill the tooth roots with a material called gutta-percha to strengthen them. The endodontist will cover the treatment area with a temporary seal while they wait for the dental lab to make a crown.
The temporary seal will be weaker than a permanent crown or natural tooth, so the patient should avoid chewing on that side of the mouth. The endodontist will also probably prescribe an antibiotic to prevent the patient from developing another infection. When the crown is ready, the restorative dentist will place it on the treated tooth.
What is Gentle Wave?
Gentle Wave is a technology used during root canal procedures that deliver fluids and acoustic energies used to clean out the infected pulp, bacteria, and other debris. It uses fluid dynamics in such a way as to prevent gas bubbles from forming and blocking access to the roots. Gentle Wave thus ensures a more thorough cleaning with less pain.
