If you have yet to treat yourself to a massage, you are missing one of life’s little pleasures. There are different types of massage, and all use a combination of pressing, rubbing and manipulating your muscles and skin. The types of massage available in a Chicago spa include:
- Swedish This is the gentlest form of massage and, as such, is very popular. It involves long strokes, circular actions, vibration, and kneading. This style of massage is very relaxing and rejuvenating.
- Deep This style of massage is often used on people that have a muscle injury. It involves forceful strokes that are targeted to deep muscles and tissue.
- Sports This style has similarities to Swedish. It is geared to people who are actively engaged in sports. It is used to treat and prevent injury.
- Trigger Point This style focuses on tight muscles that are often the result of overwork or injury.
What to Expect During a Massage
No special preparation is required for massage. The therapist will ask if you have any specific health issues that he or she should be aware of. The therapist will also ask you what you hope to get out of the treatment.
In a typical session, one that can last one to two hours, you will be asked to remove your clothing to the point where you are not uncomfortable. The treatment takes place on a special table. During the massage, you will be covered with a sheet.
Typically, the therapist will use either lotion or oil. This acts as a lubricant, reducing friction on your skin.
You can control the massage. If the therapist is pushing too hard, don’t hesitate to ask for less pressure. If you have a tight muscle, expect a little discomfort while the therapist works out the knot. Once again, if you experience discomfort or pain, do not hesitate to speak up.
